Queen Majeeda, born Karlene Hamilton, is a Jamaican-born poet, recording artist, and educator known for her fusion of reggae rhythms with spoken word poetry. She began writing songs at the age of 15 and has since written poems, short stories, and plays that often address global political issues. The name "Majeeda" is of West African origin, meaning “noble” or “glorious.”
She attended Merl Grove High School and pursued courses in Small Business Management, Article Writing, and Creative Writing at the University of the West Indies. Later, she earned a Bachelor of Arts in English with an emphasis in Journalism and minors in French and Spanish from York College of the City University of New York (CUNY) in 2004, followed by a Master of Arts in International Relations from City College of CUNY in 2008. Queen Majeeda released her debut album, "Conscious," in 1993 through Heartbeat Records. She has performed her poetry and music in various venues across Jamaica and the United States, including Reggae Sunsplash, the Nuyorican Poets Café, and Indiana University. Her works are featured in anthologies such as "Utterances and Incantations: Women, Poetry and Dub" and "Voices," a literary magazine published by York College/CUNY. Currently residing in Florida, Queen Majeeda continues to inspire through her art, addressing themes of spirituality, social justice, and empowerment. Her recent projects include the album "Wedding Invitation," released in December 2023.
